Understanding the Algorithm: What Really Works in 2025

Let me ask you something: do you create amazing content and then post it feeling like it disappears? You’re not alone. In 2025, social media algorithms are bigger, faster, and even a little bit more ridiculous than before. For the past 16 years, I’ve been entrenched with knowledge of exactly how to render the best content online. Now I’m going to share my discoveries with you in practical, applicable, real-world applications.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a business owner, a new influencer, or just someone trying to get more likes on that dinner plate picture it will help you to understand how the algorithms of today work.

So, What Is the Algorithm Anyway?

An algorithm is the brain behind your favorite social media app. It dictates what you see; when you see it; how much it pops up on your feed. It monitors things like likes, comments, shares, the amount of time spent watching a video, even how fast someone scrolls past your image.

In 2025, the kicker is that these social media apps give less of a damn about how many people see your post; they care about how well people engage with it.

What I’ve Seen That Works and Doesn’t in 2025

Here’s everything I’ve learned across the board for every platform whether it’s Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and even LinkedIn:

  1. You Need More Engagement Not Just Likes

Engagement not likes. It’s no longer about vanity metrics like views and likes. It’s about posting something that makes someone creatively stop to leave a comment on your post or makes them think enough to share it with someone else. The algorithms appreciate that type of post and the platforms want creators who foster engaged connections.

  1. The Feed is For Video Content and Something That Takes Time

Short form video is still king, but now more than ever, storytelling matters. For IG Reels, TikTok, even in YouTube Shorts the first 3 seconds better capture attention and there better be a story because there should be no filler or nonsense.

Try this: “In 2025, short attention spans mean you must capture interest immediately.”

Long tail keywords that will work: “how to get Reels seen by more people 2025”, “what type of videos does the TikTok algorithm like this year”

  1. It’s Better Not to Go Viral But to be Consistent

Consistency is better than going viral. While it’s not suggested to post daily, it’s not required for success. Just posting consistency is enough. If you are planning on posting three times a week—do it! If you want to post daily—do it! The algorithm appreciates and rewards creators who show up and engage consistently and make them more shareable.

What to include in 2025

  • Optimal posting times There are certain times of the day that your audience will be more online than not. Find out when!
Pro tip: Post at optimal posting times for each platform. (See our blog post The Best Times to Post in 2025)
  • Captions are more important than ever. No longer can you just captions with emojis. Platforms are reading your copy to determine what the post is about—and to whom it should be shown. Caption with strong keywords, a question, or a brief narrative.

  • AI Powered Features are Prized. From Meta’s Advantage+ to TikTok’s Creative Assistant, utilizing AI or machine learning tools native to the platform boosts your content in the feed. They want you to use the latest features—and you’ll be rewarded!

What to avoid in 2025

  • Hashtag stuffing – 30 generic hashtags are less effective than 3-5 quality hashtags.
  • Buying followers/engagement the algorithm is too smart; any fake engagement will lower your ranking.
  • Not engaging your audience If someone comments, respond! The more engagement you have, the more the algorithm favors you.
    Final Thoughts

I know, it’s overwhelming. But learning the algorithm doesn’t mean you have to become a different person. It merely means you need to know how to best relay your story so that the platforms comprehend.

Create only content that is authentically you. Maintain consistency. Employ video. Become a storyteller. And above all else? Keep conversing with your audience.

Growing in 2025 starts with going with the algorithm instead of against it.

You’ve got this!
